iPod Touch Vs iPhone : Makes no sense, really?

In this iPhone powered world (or atleast iPhone buzzed world), we won’t make a mistake of under-estimating the iPod touch which is also a major player in the market.

Recently, when the survey was made about the most sold gaming consoles iPod Touches were high on the charts and this Christmas iPod Touch has topped a lot of things.

App Store download stats

App Store download stats

First and foremost being the app store downloads. According to Flurry, which provides statistics about Application downloads on handheld devices, stated that Apple’s app store saw a 51% growth during Christmas and that there was about 1000% growth in downloads from iPod Touches!

This is why people around the web are telling that iPod Touch’s were the most gifted devices this Christmas (surely when compared to iPhone). It’s raining apps for Apple! [MobileCrunch]

There’s something else we had stated, referring to this. When Apple did add a video camera to iPod Nano and not to iPod Touch we said why they were doing this, so that they could sell a hell lot of iPod Touches this Christmas and then later add a camera and those who bought iPods would probably upgrade to the newer iPods soon. I am really looking forward to their January event!

The upload speed is just too awesome and i could upload 60Mb of Data within 5 Minutes with a internet speed of  3 Mbps. The interface is neat. The service is completely free and it supports multiple files, so you don’t need to upload a single file everytime, just select all of them and hit “transfer”.

You don’t need to sign up either. Just select files, type in your email id and type in your friends email id’s (upto 20 friends at a time) and then once your done with uploading you will get a confirmation mail about the upload and all your friends will be emailed a link to download the files and you could feed in a optional message if you wanted.

If was thinking real hard, as to how the service makes money, and found out that these guys make money by serving branded backgrounds on their service pages? iSlate : It’s my new tablet pc

Rumors suggest that Apple’s new tablet is going to be named iSlate. Why you ask? It’s simply because it was recently found that Apple had registered the domain, iSlate.com

That surely isn’t a big proof that it could be named iSlate because currently Apple does not even own MacBook.com or maybe iSlate.com could be registered for a future product?

I hopped on to Who.is to check out information about other domains. Got great information and it says that domains like iSlate.co.uk are registered by Mark Monitor which is affiliated with Apple.

Guys at TechCrunch and MacRumors have put a huge post down which assures you that it’s named iSlate. I am waiting for January now!

iPhone 4g with 5MP camera or Apple tablet with a 7 inch screen?

Everything buzzing up. Rumours suggest that Apple is working on something. It maybe a larger, better iPhone with higher resolution or perhaps a Apple Tablet with 7″ Screen.

Let’s have a look over the possibilities,

iPhone 4G

Motorola’s Droid has a large screen along with Google’s Android 2.1. Lots of new features, especially the extra search features. Whoever said that, “Apple won’t ever add new features until it is forced by it’s competitors to do so” and so that goes true here.

iPhone OS 4.0

iPhone OS 4.0

Reports also confirm that OS 4.0 for iPhone also has been found in the wild by App developers under their statistics as in the case Pinch Media’s app.

5 Megapixel story stands true here because Apple had placed a huge order (40-50 Million) for Megapixel CMOS Image Sensors from Omnivision, the current provider for iPhone 3GS’s 3.2 Megapixel sensors.

iPhone 4G

iPhone 4G?

News is out that this new generation iPhone would be only shown at the January event but it will be finally kept on sale sometime later.

iPhone 4G is going to get a high resolution screen and a larger screen and as i said earlier, this is much needed or Apple will go BooHoo against the other competitors. Apple is selling large number of iPhone 3GS which is around 10 Million but this may halt down with competitors coming up with kickass phones, Palm Pre, Motorola Droid, HTC’s Droid Eris and many more!

Apple Tablet

Apple Tablet?

Apple Tablet?

This one may be near to reality than anything as BoyGeniusReport claims it that it has maximum chances to appear at the January Event.

This is supported by multiple rumours. First of all, Apple asking all it’s premium app developers to provide them with apps of higher resolution although this could also be the case of iPhone 4G.

While the rumors of a 10″ tablet was floating around, now it’s being said that its a 7″ tablet.

The tablet will be having a similar OS to that of iPhone and will be functioning exactly like it but with extended features along with better screen resolution obviously and few better apps, and maybe a front camera too which might bring Video conferencing finally to the device.

Finally

No one knows what maybe true. But i really want both of them to be true! Waiting…

Drag and Drop Transcoding: A Windows 7 feature that you never knew existed!

The media, be it online or offline is flooded with news, views, reviews and help guides on Windows 7 but not once I came across this feature mentioned anywhere. Apparently, it is only in my close circle of people who know of this feature – It is called Drag & Drop Transcoding.

unofficial-windows-7-wallpaper
You might be aware the Windows 7 Device Stage. This is further enhanced if you connect a portable media player. With the new pool of decoders and encoders, Microsoft’s also doing some building in some interesting transcoding (decoding and re-encoding from one format to another) technology in Windows. Transcoding is now actually built right into the Windows 7 shell. This removes unnecessary third-party bloatware to add content to portable devices.

When you drag and drop a media file into the drive of the PMP connected to your PC, Windows 7 automatically detects the format used by the PMP and transcodes it to that specific format on the fly, without you having to fiddle with complicated media transcoding software and codecs.

This is a revolutionary feature which can simplify our lives utterly. The fact that it hasn’t been spoken about anywhere else is quite surprising. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Windows Device stage does not support the major PMPs out there. I’m not sure how many are supported. The main reason for this feature not being publicised may be that it doesn’t support the most popular PMPs like iPod and MS’s own Zune. These are detected just as a flash storage device. As for iPod, there still isn’t a way to bypass iTunes to transfer music. As far as I know, Creative Zen is supported.

Nevertheless, this feature is further enhanced with support from AMD hardware. If you have AMD graphics card that supports tream technology (which most AMD cards in the past two years do), Windows 7 automatically detects the hardwareand makes use of the GPGPU capabilities of the ATI Stream. What this does in simple terms is that it makes use of the massively parallel processing power of the GPU for a non-graphics purpose (GP- General Purpose) of transcoding the media file. This throws some heavy weight processing power at the task at hand and hence reduces the transcoding time by almost half.

As you know, transcoding of HD videos and other data intensive media takes huge amounts of power and time. Reduction of this time increases speed and helps get your media portable pretty quickly. A great utility when you’re in a hurry. There is quite a significant difference in the transcoding time with and without the use of ATI Stream.

So, if you’re on of those lucky few who’s using Windows 7 with ATI Graphics, apart from the winderful visual experience that Windows offers in the form of graphics accelerated Aero interface, this transcoding feature is sure to blow your mind. So, let me know what you think of this feature. If you are one of these lucky ones, let us know your experience if you’ve tried this feature. How did it perform? How easy was it to use? What are your thoughts? What other feature of Windows 7, do you think, can make use of newer hardware?
