Multi Touch finally arrives at Nexus One officially via OTA update

No more missing multi touch interface on Nexus One, Google just issued a OTA (Over the Air) update for Android running on Nexus one’s which brings in multi touch capabilities to your Web Browser, Gallery and Google Maps. Earlier some third party patches had enabled Multi Touch only in the browser.

This means all those pinch and zoom gestures which iPhone users are much used to have now arrived at Nexus one. Also the Google Maps version is upgraded to 3.4 which brings the talked about “Night Mode” feature to Maps.

Nexus one’s hardware was completely capable of Multi touch gestures but they had not been added initially. Rumors were up that the reason behind Google not adding these features was due to patent infringement matters with Apple as they used the same technology in their popular products, iPhone and iPod touch. Few other market analysts say that it was because Google wanted to track user’s initial reaction to Multi-touch’s absence.

This is an automatic update so it’s not in your hands for the update to start and end but you can surely get the update manually if you don’t have it yet  [Instructions here].

Nexus One Voice recognition blocks harsh words and converts them to ####

Voice to text sometimes can be embarrassing or even disgusting at times. If you want to text your friend, “Would you like to have chocolate fudge tonight?” and then the word Fudge is mistaken by your device and output is real disgusting, “Would you like to have chocolate fu** tonight?” and the * does stand for the rest of the words.

Anyway, the text receiver would surely break your bones next day. This won’t happen to you if you use your Nexus one which has a inbuilt feature as to hash of all such F and S words. But still, won’t it look weird?

Would you like to have chocolate #### tonight?

Google has a nice reason to state as to why this done in their devices.

“We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent.”

Next Android to be named Froyo aka Frozen yogurt!

Lets have a look at the names of Android versions till now

  • Cupcakes
  • Donuts
  • Eclairs

You see a pattern? C,D,E are in a alphabetical order. So next name possibly starts with a F (your guessing it, right?). It surely does and the next version of Android is going to be named Froyo which indicates Frozen Yogurt.

Erick Tseng at the Engadget Show had given out the details. Nice stuff they have got there. Now possibly what could be new features in Froyo?

Android’s silly mistake could mess up your Droid’s security

Guy’s at TechCrunch found a security flaw in Motorola Droids running on Android 2.0.1 Why you ask?

Well, if you come across the phone’s lock screen there’s this lock mechanism which is pretty cool to play with it, but there is a serious bug which allows anyone now knowing the verification code to get access to your cellphone data.

If you get there is incoming call then simply pressing the dedicated back button then it takes you to the home screen bypassing the security code, so now you can play with anyone’s data.

We know. Google also knows and they are working on it. Hopefully, the solution should come out as fast as next week!

Apple to enter Mobile Advertising market with acquisition of Quattro Wireless

Google acquired AdMob, silicon valley based startup for a price of $750 Million. This startup was focused on mobile advertising specifically for the growing smartphones, iPods, iPhones, Androids and so on.

Apple is also not behind in the race. Recently there was a cold war between Apple and Google over Google Voice application denial and also the most famous story of 2009, Eric Schimdt, who is Google’s CEO, resigning from Apple as board of director.

Apple is also rumored to be making a new map application which would challenge it’s rival Google Maps , currently used on all iPhones. Apple has challenged Google in nearly all fields and this step could be another challenge.

Quattro Wireless is also another startup which concentrates on advertising on Smartphones. It is supposed to be acquired for a price of $275 Million and the news is expected to arrive today.

Google calls for Android press gathering on Jan 5 : Smells like Nexus One

Google has called all its press mates to gather at their California office on 5th January , 2010 for a press conference and discussion.

Put on your thinking hats. Obviously you might be thinking that this is surely related to Google’s Phone, Nexus One which is running on Android OS.

With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we’ve seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what’s possible.

Please join us in Mountain View on January 5, for an Android press gathering.

See, it didn’t take a lot of time to join the dots. Google is doing it Apple style, ha? This could be the public announcement of Nexus One features and specs, which were already leaked out by Engadget.

How to run Google’s Android on HTC Windows Mobiles! (hack)

500px-android-logosvgFeeling sorry for Windows 6.5 which crushed all the expectations, similar to something what happened with Windows Vista. Now till windows comes up with something as good as Windows 7 for your mobile you would probably like switching to Android, Google’s open source OS which powers Motorola’s Droid ;)

Here’s a how you can do it.

  1. Format all that data on your HTC Windows Mobile so that, no problems later and you can expect better performance.
  2. Download Android for HTC from here. A complete package with Android for HTC.
  3. After downloading it’s time to download HaRET. You need to download this app because this app will allow Android to run in the Windows Mobile environment and reboot as Android. Note : The Phone won’t boot as Android on starting because it’s dependent on this app.
  4. After Downloading all the files it’s time to spread them over your external storage, unzip all the files on your external storage or internal storage in case of HTC Diamond. Be sure to unzip all the files in the Root Directory.
  5. Seems like your done with it. Ahem, i forgot that you should make sure that the Startup.txt is the one matching with your Cell Phone Model. The Default Package came with RAPH100 but you need to find out the exact code, just Google your model name to get it.
  6. It’s time to enjoy stuff after hardwork! Start HaRET app from your Windows Mobile phone and wait for it to reboot as Android. There you go!

This hack only works with HTC’s Touch Pro and HTC Touch HD as well as HTC Diamond but you can try it out with other models and if it works your surely lucky enough! Thanks KongTechnology!

What Google Android can do and iPhone cannot

Picture 16When iPhone 3.0 was released, it felt awesome. You know why? Obviously because it got Cut, Copy and Paste and it also got a landscape keyboard to many Applications.

Quick Search Box - Android

But, it gave me Spotlight the feature which is hard to be missed. Most of the Mac users would be aware of that, Spotlight? Search made damn easier. Search Apps, Songs, Contacts and stuff. But yesterday we learnt the Google added a QSB or Quick Search Box to Android.

This may be the perfect iPhone killer, wouldn’t it be? The Quick search box is way better than Spotlight, atleast in features.

No.1 addition is that not only searching everything on your Phone it searches the web! It includes Google search for Maps, Stocks, etc. ALong with that, you can even find nearby locations too! Awesome, na?

Well, more to go. It’s Got Voice Search too. I know, iPhone 3GS has it. But here’s something which iPhone doesn’t have. Apart from that, one more heavy feature easy to kill iPhone is Smart Search.  It records your search habits and then,  it then auto suggests and makes a hit list too.
