Facebook’s Email Service, Titan coming this Monday

For all of you, Facebook freaks we’re breaking some real great news. Back in February, we reported Facebook could possible working on a WebMail service to replace its existing Inbox System or possibly redesign it.

From what we are hearing now, Facebook is all geared up and set to release the service this Monday. Media invites are out and reports suggest that this event being held, is purely about inbox. UI change, some tweaks, POP access and of course, @facebook.com email address. Brilliant.

Facebooks has got 500 million users and this makes it incredibly easy to implement the service unlike Gmail’s other competitors. Oh, yeah you did hear about Google Vs. Facebook fight about importing contact data. Now, slowly all things are falling in their places.

In short, you could possible sending a mail to your pals from  @facebook.com account this monday!

Mark Zuckerberg calls movie on Facebook, “fiction”

If you’ve been in loop, you probably know about “The Social Network”. The movie whose story is supposed to be that of the Harvard Students who started the fastest growing network in their dorm, Facebook.

What we have found out is that Mark Zuckerberg is unhappy with the movie. He calls it “Fiction.” According to him, what is portrayed in the movie aberrates from the actual happening.

The movie presents a story which proposes series of betrayals and desperation for friends which they would never be able to appease. Chris Hughes, Facebooks co-founder quoted, “That’s not what was going on. It was a little more boring and quotidian than that.”

Mark is quite angry with the press too and in an interview with NYT, he blatantly said  “Honestly, I wish that when people try to do journalism or write stuff about Facebook that they at least try to get it right.”

Can this dude handle privacy for 400+ Million People? : Exclusive

Mark Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

Mark Zuckerberg: Just ask.

Mark Zuckerberg: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?

Mark Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.

Mark Zuckerberg: I don’t know why.

Mark Zuckerberg: They “trust me”

Mark Zuckerberg: Dumb fu**s.

What you read above was a part of IM conversation between Mark Zuckerberg (Facebooks’ Founder and CEO) who was some 19-ish at the time of chat and his friend.

Facebook is the fastest growing social network with already users more than 400 Million present. What else would you expect? Privacy Crisis, probably yes – no. With that kind of stuff above, do you think this youngster is capable of driving Facebook into the right direction but currently it’s turned towards a great downfall coming right up if it’s privacy concerns aren’t addressed immediately.  Seriously, can you trust this guy with your privacy?

Hell, with that kind of CEO attitude I see Facebook going nowhere. Good Luck.

Facebook join likes of Foursquare, Twitter- Location sharing Feature expected.

Next time when you log in to Facebook Mobile, you might get to share location. Yes, Facebook is following the lines of Twitter, that is to share location via the status updates (Remember Geotagging tweets?). The reports have been circulating for quite some time about the location features. These announcements were expected in the f8 conference, Facebook did announce some, but not the location feature.

The code has been spotted Facebook’s touch version for iPhone and iPod touch,  that reveals a coming “places” tab to accommodate location features. If you run around the code, you’ll find a clue in the Javascript code, and stand up and say “Places” is coming! Mcdonald’s has already started building a campaign around them.

The mobile version will be using the HTML5 location component to extract your location from your phone. Once done, you will be taken into a new Places area, which will have the list of venues around you to check-in. Yeah, the Foursquare way, isn’t it? The code also suggests, that Facebook will not only record the latitude and longitude, but also  your altitude, heading and speed. This will give Facebook a hell lot of your information, seriously.

The Places feature could be a major threat to it’s Facebook’s friend, Foursqaure which offers similar type of service. One thing is for sure, once Facebook enters the location sharing arena, user acquaintance with it’s new feature will be very alacritous since it beholds and army of 400+ Million Users. That means Location Sharing is here to stay and stay longer.

Facebook Evolution : It sucks more than it actually should

I am not a corporate guy with bags of pie charts and stats to explain vividly simple stuff any layman would understand with just words. I am just a school student with eyes to observe things going around me and being a web developer gives a bit more insight into how things work online.

Hottest thing up everywhere – Facebook. For some reason or the other, those doctors call Facebook, “treacherous”, and i don’t think Facebook will ever need to defend itself, it’s got 400 million users with nothing else but to do that.

Social Media is the big thing right now, but it’s more ugly than it looks like, esp. with Facebook being a key game changer in this. The original concept behind the 20,000 + server stacks that run Facebook is simple – Networking.

The truth is that it’s passé. Facebook has grown into what it should not be. Most adversely affected are the USERS. Damn it.

A decade back, when camera’s were every gadget geek’s wish, which is probably not so today-ish, people did stuff to enjoy it. Today with every piece of digital crap having image capturing lens (except iPad!) blows its reach to a much much huge market. It includes kids, who do make up a huge part of the Facebook population. What Effect I am talking about is simple, people do things just so that they can capture it with their $10 worth lens, create the fuss on facebook (so called “likes and comments”) and get lost.

The mind concept being generated in today is bull s***. I just can’t digest it, if I am going on a cable car ride to some peak couple of thousand meter high, why shall I stick my face to the window, just do all types of trials and have the scenery fit in with my face in that damn picture made of pixels, all so that I can upload it and make others burn about it? Yuk.

This way, your missing out on the actual fun, and if you don’t know what I am speaking about your probably one of those facebook-take-a-pic-and-upload-it-addicts.

Misery Songs, I hear them a lot these days on Facebook, don’t you? Unless you’ve got Russel Peters as your friend on Facebook you are most probably to hear them from “Depressed Souls” on Facebook. Negativity keeps flowing in from those dull statuses, comments and to some extent, even pictures. A Social Network is there for you to connect and not to viralize your sadness!

Bullying, Fights, and all. This one screws my head. Wars, who loves them? Ah yah, some bullies do who can ramble with words and flaunt their skills harassing people with better jobs to spend time answering their shit. Man, Network? Where do fights fit in?

The whole reason behind this lengthy post is – What Social Media was meant for and What we’ve made it. I just wanted to propel difference between these two. If doesn’t sounds as sick yet, wait till your hit by this hurricane OR Avoid It.

Facebook chat not working? : It’s fixing a massive privacy hole!

Few moments back, we’ve been reported, the presence of a massive security hole in Facebook. The hole affects all users and threatens privacy. Within few clicks anyone can view your live chats, notifications, requests, etc. and this is extremely pathetic and embarrassing for people.

Facebook’s new preview feature to check out your profile virtualizing yourself to be anyone of your friend makes all their ‘stuff’ visible to yours and vice versa!

Here’s a video of the hole in action.

Update : Facebook has disabled chat to fix this hole.

Update : Facebook’s official statement (Via Techcrunch)

For a limited period of time, a bug permitted some users’ chat messages and pending friend requests to be made visible to their friends by manipulating the “preview my profile” feature of Facebook privacy settings. When we received reports of the problem, our engineers promptly diagnosed it and temporarily disabled the chat function. We also pushed out a fix to take care of the visible friend requests which is now complete. Chat will be turned back on across the site shortly. We worked quickly to resolve this matter, ensuring that once the bug was reported to us, a solution was quickly found and implemented.

Update : Facebook chat is recovering!

Facebook’s Mission to take Over the Web : Battle Begins

It’s been roughly three years or so since the word, Social Networking / Social Media / or whatever the newspaper journalists call it, has come into existence.  Market penetration is sky-high, social networks are cashing millions of dollars and advertising culture has been altered. This has made a huge impact on how corporate brands plan their advertising budgets. What are they all looking for?

Users. People. You.

It’s quite obvious, every bit of code written on Facebook is written with the intention of making a difference as to how you play yourself online or network or share stuff. Everything is targeted towards you. This means you are their biggest priority and you make them work. Simple isn’t it? Nah, not that it’s rocket science but lot of corporate boardroom stuff goes into setting a whole thing like this to work and keep more than 400 Million people connected. Let’s get to the point. What will all this result in? Web going social. A hell lot more. Facebook’s got plan to take over the whole web. If you thought Facebook’s got a brawl with Twitter, think again. It’s no more Facebook Vs. Twitter, it’s Facebook Vs. Google. Here are Facebook’s plan why they will make you reconsider your thought.

Facebook Connect : Facebook everywhere!

Facebook.com isn’t just exploding over but it’s getting everywhere. Like a injection, the rest of the web is getting successive doses. About 80,000 websites use Facebook connect to import users from facebook to their service which include services like Digg and soon, Yahoo! too. This means facebook is in charge of users not only on it’s own platform but everywhere else too. Google also has something like Facebook connect but it sucks compared to the popular facebook buddy.

Hang in there Baby!

If you thought Facebook Connect was the biggest invasion into the the huge web itself then here’s some time to alter your thoughts again. Facebook has got another master plan. It’s planning to take over that little strip of real estate in your browser bottom most with a toolbar. That means Facebook everywhere, yes, everywhere!

Like This, Share That.

The “share” and “like” buttons you might be familiar with, will now be available all over the web. Yes, all across the web just like and share any webpage, link, object you like! Facebook now wants to control everything you read and share with your friends.

Geolocation Tagging

With what people do, where they do it is also important as social networks are increasingly growing location aware, especially with the entrance of augmented reality applications. Recently, Twitter added location tagging tweets too and then, there is foursquare, a whole network setup for the location purpose. Facebook will then not only control what you do and share, but also where you do it and how. Now this sounds fun!

The invasion has begun!

Note : As you see above, the invasion has already begun and facebook has started taking the first steps!

Facebook has a 420 Character limit for status updates too

If you never tried pushing down a huge number of words down your facebook status then here is a restriction you must know if you ever thought of trying it.

If you don’t know, Facebook has some restrictions for updating its Facebook status. You cannot type in more than 420 characters as an update. Thankfully this is 3 times more than Twitter’s character limit of 140 per tweet. If you try updating more than 420 characters, you will be greeted with an error.

Thanks Keith!
