Mobile Advertising to be reincarnated with Apple’s iAd?

If the next big thing is, it’s got to be Mobile Advertising. If analysis’s seem correct then it’s lucid that the Cell Phone markets, especially the smartphone markets in terms of browsing and downloading content have grown 10 folds in the past 3 years.

Apple too has contributed to the growth of the market immensely with the so called “revolutionary product”, the iPhone. Along with the iPhone came the App Store which has also played crucial role in promoting Application sales and the growth of the market and it now holds more than 150,000 apps. This created opportunities for advertisers to boast their products but till now there wasn’t a proposed model for it, all ideas sprinkled and few organizations using them.

Google acquired AdMob for a price of 750 Million Dollars to get into the Mobile advertising arena starting with a already powerful contender in the game. Followed by that we had the news hitting blogs, Apple had acquired Quattro Wireless for 300 Million Dollars which was also a tough challenger in the advertising market. Smells like growing fight, Google and Apple?

Steve Jobs brazenly once during a townhall meet with his companies employees, that they [Google] got into our [Apple] business of cell phones, we [Apple] did not get into their [Google] search business. Steve pointed out Google’s business strategies more or less could make Apple bankrupt if Google continued. What Now? Now it’s Apple’s turn and this time they decide to join in the advertising bandwagon and challenge the biggest contenders in the business, Google.

MediaPost wrote that Apple could be possible launching a new type of a Mobile Advertising Platform called “iAd” (signifies the i used in almost all major Apple products) and that this platform has been purely built upon the acquired platform, Quattro. The announcement of this platform will be coming up on 7th April, some four days after iPad starts shipping. Apple’s lined up all explosives, ha?

The platform will be unveiled at Madison Avenue (somewhat the heart of advertising industry), and invasion of Apple there, surely means direct shot at Google.  Apart from Mobile Advertising, i think Apple would be more interested in portable advertising which means, iPad is also included. Most companies fail to have their ideas spread and that is where they lose, but in this case Apple has already got a fair amount of means to propagate its platform with couple of millions of iPhone being used and iPod Touches, 150,000 and more apps and the iPad coming which already crossed 200,000 pre orders by now. These figures mean that Apple has got a hell lot of users there and reaching them won’t be difficult for them.

Almost all the top companies of the valley would be finding ways to get into the app store somehow or the other to advertise. Apple might be the one opening floodgates to them and prove to be another huge success.

Windows Phone 7 Series : Back with Vengeance

Windows 7 lived upto expectations and proved the Microsoft has learn form its mistakes (in this case, the biggest ofcourse – WIndows Vista) and this time it’s true once again.

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 was just a big mess and they knew it that something better was surely needed, especially after a great outcry of developers and consumers. Growing competition from competitors like Apple could have also been a force driving them to innovation. Whatever the reason maybe, Microsoft has proved it that they are the winners with Windows Phone 7 Series.

They have redesigned the whole concept of a Phone OS which is a new concept to your phones which is 100% original and you wouldn’t have experienced it (unless you own a Zune). Layouts, Motion, Transitions, Text Fonts, Hardware integrations and nearly everything your OS has, is re-engineered with Phone 7.

In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.

Steve Ballmer boasted highly of the new OS and why shouldn’t he? It’s really worth all our wait! One thing most people hate about iPhone OS is the Start Screen, it just shows you icons and icons. Phone 7 revolutionizes it with Live Tiles. This new feature grabs real time content from the web, for example all you friends photos and shows it up on your home screen on a tile and you can have any number of tiles (as long as they fit in the screen).

Window’s introduces Hubs. These bring together bring all the data from the internet, application and services together into one and most useful mashup.

  • People – This hub is like contacts on your Phone. This time, it snatches all their activity on Social Networks and Photos together and puts them here. It also provides a centralized location to post updates to Facebook.
  • Pictures – Social Networks and your Videos and Pictures now go hand in hand! Easily sync them.
  • Music + Video – If you’ve used a Zune you would be used to this. If not this is seriously fun man! This draws content from your computer and you can use Zune Desktop Software too, use online services or listen to Radio.
  • Games – As we had smelled it earlier, it’s here. Windows Live comes to Windows phone. Now you can play Xbox live games on your phone, use Spotlight feed and see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile.
  • Marketplace – The Store for Applications and Games.
  • Office – This feature makes the phone ideal to be held by every business man. Office, Outlook Mobile, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace are all here making it easier than ever to read, edit and share documents!

Now there’s something which is going to hurt Google. It’s Bing which has got tight integration with Phone 7. Search anything, anywhere amidst anything without the need of copy pasting, just Bing! Email and browsing support multi touch capabilities.

Microsoft says that work with partners is currently on and phones with Phone 7 support are being developed and will hit the stores by holiday season later this year! Overall, the interface is a huge victory for Microsoft. All hail Microsoft! Check out their official blog post here.

Palm Pre Plus+

Are you a current Pre owner? Do you feel like you were used?

A few days  ago Palm inc. released a newer model to their lineup – the Palm Pre Plus. It will ship with twice the internal memory (up to 16GB now), a standard induction cover for touchstone charging (previously an option), and the navigation button on the front panel was removed (which I think makes it look worse). One of the other minor adjustments was the removal of the orange on the keyboard.

As a Pre owner, I feel used. I paid $200 for a Pre then the monthly service fee of $99 for about 6 months. I was very happy with it besides the battery issues.. But now that I hear they are coming out with a better, more powerful phone just months after I got mine, I am pretty mad. Palm should of fixed all of this before even releasing the device! What are your opinions on the matter?

7 reasons why the Nexus one won’t kill the iPhone

When Nexus one came out and even before it’s launch, people started claiming it as the iPhone killer. It’s been the story with nearly all the phones and the most recent one was Motorola Droid.

Applications

If you see Apple’s iPhone has about a 100,000 applications. Yes, there’s a app for everything you would ever think off. Google’s android currently offers 20,000 applications.

Apple crossed 3 Billion downloads recently and 1 billion downloads were achieved in a short span of about 3 months.

Features

If we speak of the camera, Google’s Nexus one has got a 5 megapixel camera while the iPhone has got a 3 Megapixel. You might be guessing that, now i can’t argue on it, nexus is the winner.

Frankly, no. If you use a iPhone you surely love the camera interface and with Video recording capabilities in iPhone 3.0 you might never think of using any other phone again. Also i just wanted to clear out that a two megapixel difference does not affect the picture quality hugely, mostly it’s the quality of the image sensor which i think Apple has got.

You really don’t argue over the multi-touch interface iPhone has got!

Design

Simplicity is brilliant design. Apple’s iPhone completely a living example of that statement. Apple’s design skills have been everywhere, from it’s iPods to those unibody MacBooks and iPhone’s design is just too much to ignore.

No doubt, that Nexus one’s design is nice but it surely isn’t enough to beat the iPhone as of yet (even if you don’t agree with this it’s alright).

The black color on the iPhone goes very well and can suit nearly any of your clothes and styles. This is Apple’s plus point too.

Pricing and availabilty

Google’s phone is priced at $530 without contract and $180 with T-Mobile contract. iPhone is priced at $199 with AT&T contract and $599 for unlocked.

$20 and $50 difference doesn’t make it a big winner though. Well if you know Apple has got the name and some sort of a mindset in most people’s mind. If you think buying an iPhone is cool why won’t you be ready to spend some money more to get the trendy stuff? Also, when your getting access to 80,000 applications more?

The iPhone is available in 77 countries while the Nexus one is present in 48 countries. Also Nexus is ignoring markets like India too where they can expect a high sale number due to huge population. Nexus one will be coming to more countries soon later this year.

Internet Experience

iPhone was the first phone to revolutionize the internet browsing experience. Being first is always a good chance and in this case it surely is. I am not saying that no one can challenge it, (infact many did, like Palm with the pre) but not many have not been successful with their attempt so chances are low.

Integrated Store

One of the biggest advantage iPhone has is the iTunes store. Movie rentals, applications, music and everything you ever want. Android compared to the iPhone store is a kid.

Apart from that, the PC and Mac integration with the iPhone is the best thing you ever wish for. One library for everything Apple (ipods, iphone, macs!) is what i love.

Marketing

Buzz. iPhone’s there in the newspapers in everyday, it’s on television for things which i am sure Apple didn’t pay for. Geeks dream of it. Bloggers love it. Celebs also love it!

Nexus one is a new contender but if Google really wants to kick off iPhone, it surely needs a real strong marketing campaign.

Maintainence

iPhone maintenance costs are very very high but it being in the market for such a long time it doesn’t take a long time to find a good service centre (either authorized, or some guy sitting in his garage).

Here’s another picture of Nexus one Vs. other phone comparison. Have a look over it for some good pricing numbers too.

Forget everything. A new iPhone version could also be on it’s way, 4G iPhone which might give iPhone a great comeback in turns of technology and till now Apple has not disappointed us and i hope so they really won’t on 26th January!

Verizon Back on AT&T : The Truth Hurts, ha?

Picture 1
There were some cool ads thrown by Verizon on AT&T insulting it off, on it’s coverage limits, and especially the “There’s a Map For that” ads which made AT&T blow it’s temper so much to file a lawsuit against Verizon.

It wanted Verizon to remove those ads as they were misleading to customers and created a wrong impression of the network in public. There wars always go on, and it’s funny to see what different ways they come up to sue each other.

Here’s Verizon’s answer to AT&T’s lawsuit,

AT&T did not file this lawsuit because Verizon’s “There’s A Map For That” advertisements are untrue; AT&T sued because Verizon’s ads are true and the truth hurts… AT&T now is attempting to silence Verizon’s ads that include maps graphically depicting the geographic reach of AT&T’s 3G network as compared to Verizon’s own 3G network because AT&T does not like the truthful picture painted by that comparison

So they say reality? I am damn sure, the court judge would be thinking his brains out to rule out the decision in favour of any one party!

Augmented Reality comes to iPhone with 2 iPhone Apps : Must Read

It’s been long time since my last posts “Augmented Reality coming Closer to Reality“. Things were then just under development but today with thesesTwo Apps, it finally comes to the iPhone 3GS through the App Store.

cyclopediascreen_1

Cyclopedia (iTunes Link) and Wikitude are the Two Apps which make Augmented reality possible, simply by using iPhone 3GS’s GPS technology and the inbuilt compass to locate the exact location of the Person and to which direction is he pointing. The Apps use Information from Wikipedia to display.

It simple works when you start the app and turn your camera towards any place, soon the apps locate you and then provide information about through a dead simple user interface. Apart form just Wikipedia information, Wikitude renders data from the famous international review website, Qype.

These Apps are available on the Apple Store for a price of $2. Well, theses tools can serve as guides when your on a holiday. Go to any place in the world, just remove your iPhone, Put in the App and turn your Camera towards the location and there you go!

Wikitude allows users to add points of interest to the locations too. The sad thing about Cyclopedia is that having a Superb Visual Interface, it had been neglected for months since it’s release in July. Anyways, the apps on Android seem to work quite well but their accuracy is less compared to that of iPhone.

Sync Mobile and Desktop Google Search Data to for quicker search

g_search_mobile_sugesstionsThere’s one problem i always face. When i find some cheat code for a game, let say GTA San Andreas. Now later that day i go to my friends place and when we start gaming i need the cheats. On my Desktop, i got the cheats simply by searching for the term “GTA San Andreas Cheat” and not just on game, but i got 3 more game cheats, but then to do it on Mobile, is pretty hectic, to type in all the queries to get the Results.

So here’s what Google has done. Now all your desktop search data will get synced with your mobile and then you don’t need to type it again and again, just select the previous search query from Google Mobile Search box and then hit it!

All you need to do is log in with the same account on your Desktop and your Mobile and enable Web History. That’s it. Currently this feature is available on Android, iPhone and Palm WebOS. For more info check out the official release post.

Adsense Enters the the Mobile App’s market with Adsense for iPhone and Android

Well, to keep it short, Adsense has announced a new program called Adsense for Mobile Applications which Allows developers to include ads in their iPhone or Android Based applications.

This may be a very Good step by Google because the Application market is growing at a very high speed and this inturn will boost up the growth of this New Program. You can Read the Company’s Post for the Official announcement.

Till now this platform was used with only few selected Adsense partners like Sega but now it has gone public :) Here’s a short testimonial from the partners.

So this may be a great opportunity for the marketers as they may allow them to reach more audience and thereby increasing the Revenue of the developers too. Anyways, Good Luck Google!
