How Google Makes Money Online by Offering Free services

The best things in the world come for free and this statement holds true in case of Google. If i was asked to name a company which has completely exploited the potential of the word “Free” is would be Google.

I come across people asking questions, if Google offers everything for free how does it make money? Here is how it makes money.

  • Gmail – The leading email service provider is absolutely free and provides a hefty storage space of about 7 Gigabyte. One of the ways how Google is making money is advertising. Sidebars are full of ads which are related to the Email content you get.

7 Gigabyte may be enough for many users, but for few it’s not working till it’s unlimited. Whatever it maybe but Google charges you for adding additional storage to your gmail account.

The additional storage business is quite profitable because once, you’ve gotten yourself an account you probably won’t take the hassles of shifting to another email service provider.

  • Google Search – The main source of income for Google is Google Search. It is the most powerful product on the web after-all there is some reason why 451,258,500,123 searches are performed about every year and the money spent on advertising on Google is about $ 496,200,572,146. Every Query you do would surely eat away dollars from the advertisers pocket.
Picture 13Sponsored links form the best methods of income via Google search. The reason why this advertising worked is because it was targeted. When someone is researching to buy a Television and is finding reviews and comes across an Advertisement which attracts the customer due to a huge discount on the product and hence makes a sale. Did you know that the I am Feeling lucky button costed Google Millions of Dollars, not because it was a huge technological invention but it redirects users who made a search on Google to the First result without the users having to encounter with the Google’s result page which contains advertisements.
  • Google Adsense and Google Adwords – A major portion of Google’s ad revenue comes from Publishers who monetize their content using Google’s ad network. My dad used to tell me, How much can a man work? |……| This much? |…………..| This much? How much can he make others work for him? |…… No Limits. This is what exactly happens here. Google knows that revenues from search are not enough for them so it gives other publishers chance to join in their ad network where there is a mutual benefit. The publisher makes money and so does Google by taking commission from their payments. The Commission rate is not disclosed but it is surely enough to keep Google’s growth at its peak. Google Adwords is from where advertisers join their ad inventory and make payments and prepare advertising campaigns.
  • Google Apps – When Organizations go online, they prefer to go Google. Why? It saves money and it actually is quite reliable in terms of service. Picture 15Nearly all those who buy domains use Google Apps for Email, Chat etc. but the biggest drawback is that if you use free version of Google Apps, you don’t get support and that’s the reason why most companies go Premium and they have to pay like $50 per extra user!
  • Picasa Albums – If you know, the Google limits it’s users to a limit of only 1 Gb Upload space on their picasa account. So if you want to continue once you cross the limits, you might want ti buy additional storage like $5 for 20Gb per year.
  • Orkut – Social networking is on the rise, and in countries like India and Brazil, Orkut does rule the market, kind of. If your eyesight is good, you would have surely observed those advertisements on Orkut.

Google makes decent amount of income from this, but now as it is significantly loosing large amounts of users to Facebook, it’s end maybe near if Google does not do something to revive it!

  • Youtube – There a lot of arguments over this issue. Google is actually running YouTube in loss which is not a good sign for Google. To make up for loss and make actual profits Google is working very hard to monetize it.
    Youtube OverLay ads

    Youtube OverLay ads

First of all the ads you see around YouTube.com are one source of income. The next way could come from partner companies who agree to promote their music, commercials, etc on YouTube. Adwords advertising for videos is also a source of income. Youtube has also experimented a lot with Overlay ads and it’s becoming quite a bit success.

  • Shopping? Google Product search is what you might refer to and that is where money starts moving towards Google’s banks. As far as what we have learned, Google gets Referral Revenue by selling products via Google product search.
  • Picture 17Google Earth and Maps – Google Earth is the best software for Online Navigation. A lot of features included. But like nothing satisfies few people and they want more so they opt in for the Pro Version of Google Earth which costs $400 and they also offer enterprise solutions. Google Maps and other services are advertising supported and soon, you might be see new advertising which is actually local based advertising i.e if you search for local pizza store you come across ads from such stores on your map.

Super 8 reasons why People Start blogging and Posting Content Online

blogging_now

Not wasting time on other stuff and getting back to the point. As the title suggests here are 10 reasons as to why people get onto internet and start a blog. There you go!

  1. They have a big fight with their School/College/Office Colleagues and the decide to take on a mission, to completely shatter, insult and kick off other persons identity (One Reason why i started blogging was to take revenge with one of my class mates. Since he had lots of hair on his body, i named my first post as “Hairy Potter” with his pictures.)
  2. They just broke up with their GirlFriend/BoyFriend and now, they think their next girlfriend could be their blog. Sounds, Weird but people do attempt such things. If you want to spot such blogs out, then you can surely make out this when the blogger is blogging about his ex’s and giving love advices for you, to now break i.e becoming the next love guru.
  3. They Think blog as a matrimonial service and try to find the “Eligible Partner” and often hide their identities under names like the “Eligible Bachelor”. Seems Weird? Check out this blog which actually does this.
  4. They bought a new product, maybe a car, gadget or anything. They bang the customer service desk but no response. Now the only method left is to hurl abuses at the company via your blog and make them understand the damn situation. (Wait, i did this sometime back too)
  5. Some People think Blogging is the shortest route to become rich online. This is lame, but i can find you 100,000′s of blogs where they just have 10 posts, or perhaps they do post frequently but by visiting their blog posts, you find more ad slots compared to actual content. Well, some people do make money online after hard work like Sensonize.com while others don’t give a damn about the content they post!
  6. Blogging, is the fastest way to catch attention of people, and it’s greatest advantage is that its free. You pick up a noble cause and support it. Here’s a Example of this Act – FundACause.
  7. Apart from Money People do it because they think, blogging will get them Fame, name in newspaper headlines, Tv Channels :=) Well, that does happen [True in My Case :P ] but only to people who are dedicated. Hoping that you add content for a month, and have super high expectations is crap, unless your a celeb, or some high dignitary (Obvious).
  8. 40% people blog for fun. Correct, and thats 40% blogs on the web are more interesting than others :) Its not about just posting content, but posting things which you are interested in, your opinion, views and things which you think can make a difference.

PC Gaming is not Dead, its returning!

PC gaming isn’t dead; it’s merely waiting for the day conditions are finally right for its return. And why don’t we keep our fingers crossed? Because PC gaming’s “return” is nigh.

Finally, someone has conducted a semi-official survey of PC gamers’ buying habits.
The result? RPS discovered that, of the 2,000 keyboard warriors interrogated, 93% have digitally purchased at least one PC game in the past 12 months, 71% bought more than four games digitally, and, through some flashy mathematics, that 47% of all PC purchases in 2008 were digital.

Assuming that RPS’ findings are more or less accurate, this means NPD’s figures would nearly need to be doubled before hitting the mark.

Now at this point, none can confer for sure about the probable and possible reasons for PC gaming to be the dying breed or whether it is really going to turn back to glory!Whether it’s the recent trend and craze for the online gaming portals(Like Zapak) or are the Game developers to be blamed for not being able to keep up to the expectations and hypes of the potential gamers across the world and not being able to keep the standard as higher as the online game portals provide, keeping in mind the graphics interfaces and the feel and look of the games.Or is it the reason that the developers are skipping the PC gaming part and are more interested and observant on console?

None can say for sure.

To quote one famous Gaming review portal:

It’s not about graphics. It’s not about movie tie-ins. It’s not about dual pistols. It’s about games that make us think, reason, interact, and use our minds. If we wanted to turn our minds off, we’d be sitting on the couch with a PS2 controller. As with movies, all other considerations are secondary to immersion. If you want to make a truckload of money, just get out of the PC entertainment market and sell to consoles exclusively. If idiotic tripe like Star Wars: Republic Commando and The Guy Game never touched the PC I’d have no beef with you, but by developing for consoles and then porting those horrid, god awful titles to the PC you consistently stifle the development of original IP, and original IP is what has made the PC game market so consistently great over the years. PC gaming is going to die, and soon, if you don’t stop this madness, and I will lay the blame squarely at your feet. The love of the PC and the desire to create original works of entertainment art is what got the PC game market going, but it’s the greedy monopolies like EA and EIDOS, whose only concerns are the almighty dollar and pandering to the lowest common denominator, that are going to tear it apart.

Tr.im got back on it’s feet : Questions surround trim now

Recently Tr.im had decided to shut down and they also posted that all links would stop working after 31st of December. It looked as if they were damn serious.

The news spread like fire and within a day the blog-o-sphere and the Twit-o-sphere was hot with news and view of people and readers putting on their comments. Some actually started lamenting for the service ( I didn’t).

But now Tr.im is back, the reason that has been stated that shutting down of tr.im created great outcry in the blogging community and so Tr.im had come back.

Many analysts thought that this was a Pr Stunt and so did i. Tr.im also stated that Tr.im will continue to function as it used to and so will the API. But surely this will give a boost to the url shortening service.

Trim is still looking for someone to acquire it and if i am not wrong then Trim might soon find it’s new owner. Lets see what happens!
