Ubuntu Linux to come to Tablets and Smartphones by 2014 : Do we need one more OS?

It’s never bad to have alternatives, right? Windows and Mac are the current highest market share holders in the computer OS area, but we always require an alternative. To prevent market domination or to enforce healthy competition. Ubuntu was made for this purpose, or even if it wasn’t, it’s still doing it.

Ubuntu was destined to enter the smarphone and tablet market. It’s very obvious because if it wants to survive it has to adapt to the changing computing devices. Canonical (Creator of Linux) founder, Mark Shuttleworth is going to announce the future plans at Ubuntu Developer Summit. He says Version 14.04 – April 2014 will see the launch of the OS on tablets and phones.

Ubuntu Unity Interface

They have been in talks with partners for over 18 months and the OS is going to land on ARM powered tablets which are predicted to be out next year.

I can’t deliver a product schedule yet, Ubuntu is already working with hardware partners to bring products to market. As progress is made Ubuntu will take the device-specific code, open source it, and roll it into standard Ubuntu ~ Mark Shuttleworth, Founder – Canonical.

Even Ubuntu’s desktop interface moreover looks like it’s meant for a tablet. It’s too simple to be on a Desktop. The release of the new unity interface was a signal that they’re eyeing touch devices. I don’t think they can really melt a rock because they cannot match the magnitude of iOS or Windows Developers in just few years. Via ZDNet.

Symbian^4 makes a debut : Seriously, not what we expected

Symbian^3 was shown up at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona and here we are greeted with demo videos for Symbian^4 which surely leave us disappointed a lot.

It’s been hyped a lot, and especially after Windows Phone 7 Series, we expect a lot from the newer and upcoming operating systems. It did not live upto expectations. We were expecting a breakthrough in mobile OS with some unique innovation but guess what we got? Three home screens which are widget ready. They have kept the touch sensitiveness very high and this OS revolves all around it.

What is surprising is that after so much hype and time, we get this? We were expecting something better. Nokia, you’ve got to work real hard! The videos we’ve got are extremely short, like about 30 seconds but enough to give a glimpse of what’s going to be out there. This comes into production in early 2011.

Windows Phone 7 Series : Back with Vengeance

Windows 7 lived upto expectations and proved the Microsoft has learn form its mistakes (in this case, the biggest ofcourse – WIndows Vista) and this time it’s true once again.

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 was just a big mess and they knew it that something better was surely needed, especially after a great outcry of developers and consumers. Growing competition from competitors like Apple could have also been a force driving them to innovation. Whatever the reason maybe, Microsoft has proved it that they are the winners with Windows Phone 7 Series.

They have redesigned the whole concept of a Phone OS which is a new concept to your phones which is 100% original and you wouldn’t have experienced it (unless you own a Zune). Layouts, Motion, Transitions, Text Fonts, Hardware integrations and nearly everything your OS has, is re-engineered with Phone 7.

In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.

Steve Ballmer boasted highly of the new OS and why shouldn’t he? It’s really worth all our wait! One thing most people hate about iPhone OS is the Start Screen, it just shows you icons and icons. Phone 7 revolutionizes it with Live Tiles. This new feature grabs real time content from the web, for example all you friends photos and shows it up on your home screen on a tile and you can have any number of tiles (as long as they fit in the screen).

Window’s introduces Hubs. These bring together bring all the data from the internet, application and services together into one and most useful mashup.

  • People – This hub is like contacts on your Phone. This time, it snatches all their activity on Social Networks and Photos together and puts them here. It also provides a centralized location to post updates to Facebook.
  • Pictures – Social Networks and your Videos and Pictures now go hand in hand! Easily sync them.
  • Music + Video – If you’ve used a Zune you would be used to this. If not this is seriously fun man! This draws content from your computer and you can use Zune Desktop Software too, use online services or listen to Radio.
  • Games – As we had smelled it earlier, it’s here. Windows Live comes to Windows phone. Now you can play Xbox live games on your phone, use Spotlight feed and see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile.
  • Marketplace – The Store for Applications and Games.
  • Office – This feature makes the phone ideal to be held by every business man. Office, Outlook Mobile, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace are all here making it easier than ever to read, edit and share documents!

Now there’s something which is going to hurt Google. It’s Bing which has got tight integration with Phone 7. Search anything, anywhere amidst anything without the need of copy pasting, just Bing! Email and browsing support multi touch capabilities.

Microsoft says that work with partners is currently on and phones with Phone 7 support are being developed and will hit the stores by holiday season later this year! Overall, the interface is a huge victory for Microsoft. All hail Microsoft! Check out their official blog post here.

Windows Vs. Mac : What People on twitter think

apple-vs-windowsThere is this war always going on which is capable enough to be called as World War 3, it’s Mac Vs. Pc. So, today i go on asking people on twitter what they feel about it. Here are some the results i found, which i found funny.

When i Searched for F*** windows on Twitter i found some results worth to be listed here, Picture 7Picture 8And if thats not it, People are abusing Bill Gates too!

When i asked People why Windows is Better than Mac, than What i got was expected

RT @monikkinom: Need this for my post : Why do you Think Windows is Better than Mac? #urgent #help _ it isn’t! (Tweet by tim_butcher)

Here’s DesiNinja’s Tweet Conversation which might explain why people use Windows,

Tweet 1 : ‘cos all the cracked version of latest full softwares & games r available of win only.

Tweet 2 :  thats the primary reason i shifted frm ubuntu… i like linux otherwise.

But this is quite weird. People Use the same windows and howl abuses on it, it’s like making a hole in the plate your eating. So, to cover up i had some windows Guys too, I had put a poll to ask “Does Windows Suck” to clear out the above discussed points and i was surprised at the result, which said that 75% people feel windows does not suck.

Next, i searched for Mac F***, but amazingly i found some tweets which supported Apple!

But finally Pricing does matter and people prefer buying PC’s because they are more affordable for sure. This is something what Apple Needs to take under consideration. $1000+ for Computers is way expensive.

Tweet by Tito : becoz I am an Indian and I cannot afford to buy a Mac..my dad is poor

Final Note : Well, i found out Twitter is filled with lot of Apple Fanboys, who can abuse off Windows, but at the same time there are few Windows Lovers too, ahem ahem, (I know some of them) and Linux Lovers. But it seems most run on windows and are always complaining.. But for me, whatever it may be, my work should be done. What do you think?

A Sound is worth thousand actions : Using Mac’s Speech to Action Feature

Mac OS X has many features, and most of them are hidden and they won’t reveal until you search for them.

My System Preferences

My System Preferences

Today, when i was just changing my Wallpaper on my Computer, i just clicked on Speech in the System Preferences. Well, then what i found was the Text to Speech stuff, which in Windows is known as Windows Narrator.

Picture 37

Speech Settings

Well and Good that Mac has it. But then i saw another feature, called Speech Recognition. I clicked on it. All i saw was Speakable Items Written on Top with options, to Click on or off. Following my age old habit, i clicked on and waited to see what happened.

Picture 38Some Small Circle like thing popped up with a Microphone drawn on it, and it had something written over there, “Esc”. So, i just pressed “Esc” and the Mic Started Receiving Voice. Good. I started singing….

But then, i though what is it exactly? And i don’t know what happened or was it a co-incidence, i said “Apple” and at that time i was Watching some YouTube Video. A new tab opened with Apple.com!

Well, that was just the starting. I went back to the settings, and dug in, like i always do and found out many, many commands which could be used do save time, and just do simple tasks.

When keeping “Esc” pressed (or any other key which you can assign in the Speech Settings), i just spoke “What time is It?” and then i heard some voice repeating my question with the answer.

What Time is it?

What Time is it?

And if that’s not enough, you could assign your own names too, for example i landed on hop.im (My Url shortening service) and i just said “Make This Page Speakable” and then some Box Popped out asking me to type in something which could be said by me everytime i want to open the page. I named it Hop. So, now every time i say “Hop” it opens hop.im in my broswer. Same With Twitter, Google and Apple (Ofcourse) and many more.

Just a Tip : Using a External Microphone is suggested because the internal one’s are located at odd places, and in order to record it clearly you need to take lots of pains, so a external would rock. Also, there have been lots of problems i have been facing with this because of some Accent problems, Our (Indian) English is way different from those of the Americans.

Apple’s Snow Leopard 10.6 was out on Apple’s Online Store : Kind of!

Mac Box Set version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was recently up on the Apples Online Store. The product was up for sale and delivery was to be made in 24 hours but now, there is no such page online on the Apple Store. The Box has iLife 09 and iWork 09 with it and was priced at $169.

Apple also stated that the users who update from Leopard 10.4 will have to upgrade by buying this set whereas people running Leopard 10.5 can buy the the Single OS priced at $29. Well if you really don’t want to pay $169 for Leopard, better upgrade your Mac to 10.5 and the simply by the Stand Alone OS.

Well the thing is not about this but the fact that Snow Leopard will soon be released the public. Many Rumours are floating around the web. Apple Announced that Snow Leopard will be out in September while many sources claim it will be out as soon as 28th August.

Snow Leopard Build 10A432 is being claimed as the final release of the OS and also many Photos of it have been leaked over the Internet. We’re not sure if they are 100% genuine but it makes us believe that they are genuine.

How much ever you try Microsoft, you’ll fail : Hackers win against software giant

It’s not long time since Windows 7 RTM had been announced. But now if you check out popular torrent websites, you will already find the Cracked Version of Windows 7 Ultimate RTM there!

The Hackers somehow managed to steal OEM disc of Windows 7 which was originally meant for Lenovo. Easy Task. Now came the cracking part. It was the same as it was while cracking up Windows Vista. Activation key was murmured from the Disc itself.

But there’s a twist there. The hackers had to change some Hardware settings to make the crack work on their PC. This is the first time something like this has happened. And i think it’s good, Microsoft is working towards stopping piracy but better luck next time, you loose Microsoft!

Google Chrome OS : Now that’s an Operating system!

Inspired by Google Chrome which has over 30 million users, Google has decided to release a new open-source OS, “Google Chrome OS”. This OS is targeted for NetBooks. Well Many of you might be thinking, where is Android?

Google Clarified that this OS is separate from Android, Google Chrome OS is meant for people who spent most of their time on the computer Surfing the web. It is Based on Linux Kernel. It’s Very simple, A Chrome Running with a different Windowing system. This may turn out a bigger problem for Windows Later. But right now, no predictions.

Why will you have to Shift to Google Chrome OS? Here’s what Google Says

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

All web based applications can run on the Chrome OS and the best part is that all of these applications will also run on your Windows or a Mac computer. Another Good news is that Chrome OS will work on x86 and ARM Chips, both! Google also said that it is in talks with it’s partners and will be releasing it by the start of 2010.
