Flash did turn out to be Adobe’s Achilles’ Heel

Adobe’s decision to halt the development of Flash Player on the Mobile came as a blow to the company’s 2+ year long commitment. They almost went to war with Apple to protect it. And now this. Adobe’s shift in focus from Flash to HTML5 for Mobile Browsers was taken keeping most developers out of focus. It has left them stranded.

What happens now? Adobe says despite discontinuing development they will continue to release bugs and security updates. That’s all for the show. They will drop support for all future device upgrades. This is a rash decision and disrupts the developer ecosystem who were dependent on Flash for mobile integration.

Adobe tried hard implementing Flash into mobiles but performance reports showed poor results. It almost led to diverging of the mobile development, which either for-sided flash or not. This was yet again, not in anyone’s favor. Flash, as Jobs said, was made for the PC-Era. It couldn’t  adapt to the newer standards. It altogether needed a replacement and a gradual shift but continuous upgrades to same old thing wouldn’t do the trick. Adobe failed to understand it and the reason too is clear, it was and is (On Desktops) its cash cow.

They decide to channelize their advancements onto HTML5, the newest open standard for web development. As the market changed, media consumption habits altered and as everything moved to faster performance – Adobe slogged. The Cost was high. Today, the entire brand identity is at stake. Obviously, by letting mobile phones go away, it’s already running a race to lose. Who would want to develop applications for Flash despite its great features if it offers no reliability. Who would want to waste their hardwork?

This would shake any developer’s faith in Flash on ANY platform. How can you suddenly stop supporting a widely distributed client for the newer devices with one blog post? The last two decades, when closed standards were treated with respect, Flash rose to power. Now it’s time that industry moves to Open Standards like HTML5, CSS and Javascript which offer more reliability and if not provide features like Flash but at least turn out to viable alternatives (for now).

There are several reasons why Flash failed.

  • It didn’t garner support from Apple. They hold a lot of Mobile Market Share. A lot of.
  • It really wasn’t that good. Performance sucked and it didn’t go with the concept of newer devices.
  • It had a premium tag for its developer tools. Premium tag for making something while you could run the same trick with Open Standards turned out a price too high to pay for Adobe.
With Flash going, the industry that suffers the most is Gaming. Zynga built an entire platform on Flash, it is now going to have a tough time. Even the newer standards don’t support something that advanced as of yet. What’s the only option left to developers is to start focusing on making native apps for the Mobile OS’s. This step will of course be readily be welcomed by phone companies who desperately want to expand their App Stores.
Conclusion is that this move is going to cost Adobe everything. ABI Research data suggests that HTML5 adoption on mobile devices will be 2.1 Billion in 2016. Flash could have been there but now it will not.

How to Create a Social Networking Website like Facebook in Ten minutes : Step by Step Tutorial

This is a quick step by step tutorial of how to make a Social Networking Website like Facebook in TEN Minutes. (This is an Updated tutorial version of the past one)

Step 1.) To Begin with, you need to have a web hosting account. You can get a free hosting account (list of free web hosts) but the problem with these hosts is that they have forced ads or bad uptime or unnecessary stuff required. Make sure the free host gives you FTP access and at least one MySQL Database and PHP support. I recommend you to buy a HostGator hosting account to begin with as it has all things required. Their Hatchling plan is superbly cheap (less than $4 a month) and use a coupon for more discount.

Step 2.) Get a domain too if you’ve bought hosting and configure domain with the hosting account. After all that has been done you will have to install WordPress. There are many ways of installing WordPress. If you’ve got Cpanel, then you can install WordPress with one click installer. If not, you will have to manually do that. Here’s how to do that too. Make sure you install that in the root directory of your hosting account.

Step 3.) After you have done that, you will have to log into your WordPress Blog. Now go to Plugins >> Add New. Type in “BuddyPress” and install that plugin. If you want to manually install it, here’s the link to the plugin.

Step 4.) Activate the Plugin.

Step 5.) Now go to Manage Themes and activate the Buddypress Default Theme.

Step 6.) You’re half way through. Now Few more things and you are there! On your WordPress Dashboard, go to General Settings and tick mark Anyone can Register option.

Step 7.) Now go to Profile Field setup and add the fields to be filled by users when signing up (stuff like Age, Website, Gender, Interests, bla bla).

Step 8.) You’ve got loads of features already. If you want to add more features like Photo Albums, Videos, Chat, you can install plugins to do that. (Here’s a complete list).

Step 9.) If you are annoyed with the current design, you can use a new theme to match your Social Network. A full list of Buddypress Compatible themes.

Well IE 6 is one of the most used browsers (atleast in India) and Orkut is one of the most used Social Networking websites in India. Now the Bad part. If your using Internet Explorer 6, you really need to change!

Google’s Orkut has dropped support for Browser Internet Explorer six following many other websites which have taken part in IE6 no more campaign.

Well personally i think it is necessary to kick it off because so many exploits have been found in Internet Explorer six and also Webmaster need to work really hard to optimize their website for internet explorer six (i know that because i have had great problems with that!)

It’s quite clear that Internet Explorer can’t run ahead with the technological developments like HTML 4, 5 and so on… So it’s time to say Good bye to your Internet Explorer 6!

Tired of Captcha? Here come’s Captcha the Dog!

Sometime’s Captcha used in Web Forms and other places make’s it difficult for RObots to access those forms but then sometimes it makes it ten times more difficult for even a human to enter the captcha correctly. So here’s a great solution for web developers to prevent Robo’s from submitting forms and also make it easy for humans to enter the captcha.

A new service called Captcha the Dog allows developers to replace their captcha form with the provided captcha where a user has to click on all the Dogs in the Captcha untill you see no Dog’s remaining in the captcha image and all Cat’s Present. The Challenge is always the same – Prevent Robo’s and make it easier for Humans.

Google’s Pagerank does affect your Website Traffic

PagerankThis is for all those who are looking to get some good traffic to their blog and they think that Google’s Pagerank Does not affect their sites traffic.

I fully believe that Google’s Pagerank Does affect your Traffic indirectly because the amount of traffic you receive from Google’s Search Engine Depends on that. I can say that to you from whatIi have learn from my experience. I know its tough to believe but thats the truth. You don’t believe me? Read what i observed.

  • No of pages Indexed. When i recieved my first PR 1 i checked out my results and found that only about 230 of my pages being indexed. But after getting PR 3 i found out that about 350 pages were indexed. If you want to see how many pages are indexed just Google “site:yoursite.com”
  • And ofcourse if number of pages are increasing the you will get more traffic from search because there would be a much larger reading content for fellow serachers.
  • The Keywords for which i ranked 7th or 9th in some search results Etiole has climbed up to 4th or 5th results
  • More readers mean more traffic as if they like your blog or content they would probably post it on Social Netwroking websites or Bookmark it and then some may even blog about it and thereby giving you more links. So then your PR may increase again.
  • All this may or may not be true. This is what i have observed.

Well If you have a experience to speak about be sure to post it in the comments and if it’s got the power than we will also post about it on our blog.
