Mass Interception of Internet, Phone Calls and Text Messages by Governments : Wikileaks

Spy Files - WikileaksInterception of your smartphone usage by private companies was just being debated on. Just then, Wikileaks releases 250+ documents under the Spy Files project, full of classified information about interception of electronic devices and platforms by the governments of various countries.

These documents are coming from 160 “Intelligence Contractors”, many of them located in the western developed nations. These organizations are responsible for creation of interception devices, softwares and other technologies. These include Internet Monitoring, SMS Monitoring, Phone Monitoring, Trojan, Speech Analysis and GPS Tracking.

Organisations like Nokia, RIM and Cisco are also involved. The companies are located in Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Ukraine and United States.

What these technologies can do -

  • Record Every keystroke on your computer and smartphone.
  • Track your location to a 50 Metres radius even if you phone is on standby (GPS).
  • Intercept Text Messages and Phone Calls all the time Without the Knowledge of  Telecommunications Provider.
  • They can track every move you make and are even capable of sending sounds in your vicinity directly to the control centres without the awareness of the user.
  • BBM (Blackberry Messenger) and other Instant Messenger’s can tracked seamlessly.
  • Remote Controlled Flying devices to collect surveillance data.
  • ‘Voiceprints’ to match phone calls and identify an individual.
Griffcomm Spy Pricelist

The Nasty Part

The most feared outcome of such technology being available to Governments is suppression of movements against the wrong or perhaps, the powerful wrong people. It is a serious privacy concern, (Well, does privacy even exist any more?) and breaches moral ethics.

With Great Power comes Great Responsibility – Uncle Ben

Problem 1. Dictators have invested in these technologies to keep a check on any uprising. Many devices manufactured by VASTech, South Africa and ZTE Corp of China have been found in Egypt and Libya where they had “Listening Rooms” set up to monitor any digital maneuver. This breaches Human Rights and vests infinite amount of power of in the ruler who can over run any movement. Communist nations like China are using these technologies ruthlessly to ‘control’ the nation.

Problem 2. With Eastern Nations like India where governments are still in midst of corrupt practices, Tracking Technologies are used by dishonest officials to supplement their political rivalries. These technologies can further reach to business organizations who track their employees (Happening in China).

Problem 3. Military and Security Organizations which can suppress any issue in their countries are enabled to locate any individual on the map in moments. If you realize, they can do anything at any moment without anyone getting to know. This weapon could cost many countries their foundations of democracy.

Problem 4. Private Organisations create softwares to analyze all the data collected. For military organizations, this is a gold mine. They maintain full control over the population. The Digital Age is not bounded by the borders of the country. One country can collect data from dozens of other countries. This indeed is The Digi-Cold War.

Problem 5. Irresponsible usage by mismanaged governments could be exploited by Mafia’s and Powerful Magnates to create fear and do just what they want.

This industry is making billions for those who create such technologies at the cost of what?

Flash did turn out to be Adobe’s Achilles’ Heel

Adobe’s decision to halt the development of Flash Player on the Mobile came as a blow to the company’s 2+ year long commitment. They almost went to war with Apple to protect it. And now this. Adobe’s shift in focus from Flash to HTML5 for Mobile Browsers was taken keeping most developers out of focus. It has left them stranded.

What happens now? Adobe says despite discontinuing development they will continue to release bugs and security updates. That’s all for the show. They will drop support for all future device upgrades. This is a rash decision and disrupts the developer ecosystem who were dependent on Flash for mobile integration.

Adobe tried hard implementing Flash into mobiles but performance reports showed poor results. It almost led to diverging of the mobile development, which either for-sided flash or not. This was yet again, not in anyone’s favor. Flash, as Jobs said, was made for the PC-Era. It couldn’t  adapt to the newer standards. It altogether needed a replacement and a gradual shift but continuous upgrades to same old thing wouldn’t do the trick. Adobe failed to understand it and the reason too is clear, it was and is (On Desktops) its cash cow.

They decide to channelize their advancements onto HTML5, the newest open standard for web development. As the market changed, media consumption habits altered and as everything moved to faster performance – Adobe slogged. The Cost was high. Today, the entire brand identity is at stake. Obviously, by letting mobile phones go away, it’s already running a race to lose. Who would want to develop applications for Flash despite its great features if it offers no reliability. Who would want to waste their hardwork?

This would shake any developer’s faith in Flash on ANY platform. How can you suddenly stop supporting a widely distributed client for the newer devices with one blog post? The last two decades, when closed standards were treated with respect, Flash rose to power. Now it’s time that industry moves to Open Standards like HTML5, CSS and Javascript which offer more reliability and if not provide features like Flash but at least turn out to viable alternatives (for now).

There are several reasons why Flash failed.

  • It didn’t garner support from Apple. They hold a lot of Mobile Market Share. A lot of.
  • It really wasn’t that good. Performance sucked and it didn’t go with the concept of newer devices.
  • It had a premium tag for its developer tools. Premium tag for making something while you could run the same trick with Open Standards turned out a price too high to pay for Adobe.
With Flash going, the industry that suffers the most is Gaming. Zynga built an entire platform on Flash, it is now going to have a tough time. Even the newer standards don’t support something that advanced as of yet. What’s the only option left to developers is to start focusing on making native apps for the Mobile OS’s. This step will of course be readily be welcomed by phone companies who desperately want to expand their App Stores.
Conclusion is that this move is going to cost Adobe everything. ABI Research data suggests that HTML5 adoption on mobile devices will be 2.1 Billion in 2016. Flash could have been there but now it will not.

How to Create a Social Networking Website like Facebook in Ten minutes : Step by Step Tutorial

This is a quick step by step tutorial of how to make a Social Networking Website like Facebook in TEN Minutes. (This is an Updated tutorial version of the past one)

Step 1.) To Begin with, you need to have a web hosting account. You can get a free hosting account (list of free web hosts) but the problem with these hosts is that they have forced ads or bad uptime or unnecessary stuff required. Make sure the free host gives you FTP access and at least one MySQL Database and PHP support. I recommend you to buy a HostGator hosting account to begin with as it has all things required. Their Hatchling plan is superbly cheap (less than $4 a month) and use a coupon for more discount.

Step 2.) Get a domain too if you’ve bought hosting and configure domain with the hosting account. After all that has been done you will have to install WordPress. There are many ways of installing WordPress. If you’ve got Cpanel, then you can install WordPress with one click installer. If not, you will have to manually do that. Here’s how to do that too. Make sure you install that in the root directory of your hosting account.

Step 3.) After you have done that, you will have to log into your WordPress Blog. Now go to Plugins >> Add New. Type in “BuddyPress” and install that plugin. If you want to manually install it, here’s the link to the plugin.

Step 4.) Activate the Plugin.

Step 5.) Now go to Manage Themes and activate the Buddypress Default Theme.

Step 6.) You’re half way through. Now Few more things and you are there! On your WordPress Dashboard, go to General Settings and tick mark Anyone can Register option.

Step 7.) Now go to Profile Field setup and add the fields to be filled by users when signing up (stuff like Age, Website, Gender, Interests, bla bla).

Step 8.) You’ve got loads of features already. If you want to add more features like Photo Albums, Videos, Chat, you can install plugins to do that. (Here’s a complete list).

Step 9.) If you are annoyed with the current design, you can use a new theme to match your Social Network. A full list of Buddypress Compatible themes.

Step 10.) All set to go! An Example of a working website is testbp.org. You have made something like this!

If you find this difficult, you can mail the author for help or get a full fledged working social network with full support for a affordable price within 24 hours. [Contact : monik[at]etiole[dot]com]

GoDaddy CEO kills elephant and boasts cruel video : Twitter lashes back

If the board of directors at GoDaddy inc. (Domain and Hosting Company) are planning to lay off someone, it’s surely got to be the CEO, Bob Parsons. Why?

He smartly killed an elephant and shot a video. Posted it online for the world to see. What’s even worse is that he appears quite happy and poses over the dead elephant, victoriously. He’s even included the part where the africans rip apart the flesh of the elephant and a stampede for it. This is ridiculous and disgusting, especially for me the fact being that I am a pure vegetarian.

Twitter is lashing out on the poor CEO and leaving no opportunity to make up for his mistake. I guess, he actually deserves it.

What PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) says,

I am writing to present you with PETA’s first-ever scummiest CEO of the year award (your certificate is on the way). You deserve the award for your egregious disregard for the life of the elephant you shot and killed for your personal enjoyment. Such behavior only shows a poverty of understanding and a deep insecurity, perhaps in your own masculinity. Nonlethal methods are available to protect crops from elephants left hungry because of their disappearing habitat.

What Bob Parsons replies in defence,

I stand by my decision to help African villagers. I believe elephant management is beneficial. I have the support of the people who really matter in this situation, the families of Zimbabwe — people who need help to survive. I have the support of tribal leaders and the government.

.XXX domains make it to the web but not India

If you’ve been in the roll, most controversy surrounded domain .xxx got approved this week with lots and lots of complications and mixed reviews from all around the world.

India’s IT ministry has decided to block off all the .xxx domain’s right away after their release. India has constantly been trying to block porn in India, punishing porn viewers and publishers all over the country.

Two things, it’s good that .xxx could be a way to segregate all the porn and propose a “red-light” area online and just keep it away from the rest of the internet. Second thing is that even the the website, with a .xxx which isn’t a porn website will get blocked. That is sick, what if someone wanted a fancy name with xxx’s? Like for example, thefileswhichsaid.xxx or whatever?

From what we are hearing possibly many other Asian countries like Indonesia are planning to follow India’s move. Well, frankly I don’t think its really going to make any difference because the porn industry already is aware of such steps and that .xxx would merely be an additional name as they will continue operating on .com domains until ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers which manages Internet Protocols) makes it mandatory for all porn websites to shift to the new domain (which it wouldn’t).
