RockMelt doesn’t melt a rock : Desktop Social Browser won’t work now

I just landed on Techmeme and was greeted with tons of posts hitting rocking the headline about RockMelt, the new Social browser which opened up for Beta today.

Frankly, it really doesn’t bother me which browser I am running as long it is fast, reliable, has a good UI, bookmarks, and it doesn’t clutter the screen. RockMelt might be good with the former but with conserving your screen’s real estate, duh.

It integrates Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, YouTube, infact the whole social web especially with a large part of its attention diverted to FaceBook.

The left column of the browser is for Facebook freaks. Its got chat, sending messages and status messages. Right column for Twitter and RSS feeds which updates itself in the background. The browser is based on chromium so not much difference with icognito window and other identical features.

The search bar has been modified to pull up relevant results from relevant websites directly without actually showcasing all google results.

What I hate about it, it’s the biggest distraction. I am sure, its not going to be allowed in office. You are trying to finish preparing reports before todays presentation and then you hear a ‘pop’, Jacy wants you to join her at some ice cream parlor. Nice.

Right and Left columns are gone and take away lot of pixels on my screen. And finally, how many of you spend social networking on your computer? I think there has been a major shift to smartphones and Tablets. This really doesn’t make sense unless they come up with apps for portable devices too. This browser could be the answer to those networking freaks who spend hours on those sites but if you are a serious worker, Chrome “ki Jai ho“.

How to use iPod, iPad or iPhone internet on your desktop computer

One of the greatest problems I came across was making good use of my buddy computer running on P4, Windows XP sp1 with no Wifi card. The worse part, I just had one router which was already connected to Airport express which powered my iDevices and Mac. My computer sat helpless with no internet and I enjoyed “Flash-Less” internet on my iPod and iPad.

Finally, today i got fed up and made it work. This is how I did it.

  1. Makesure your Wifi Signals are strong enough to make it to your desktop.
  2. Jailbreak your iPod, iPhone or iPad if you’ve not done it already. Once done, download PdaNet from Cydia.
  3. Download the desktop client from PdaNet’s website. It’s available for Mac and PC.
  4. Now launch the PdaNet software on your computer.
  5. Attach your iPod/iPhone/iPad to the computer and make sure your Wifi is switched on and is using the Wifi you want the desktop to run on.
  6. Launch the PdaNet app on your iDevice.
  7. Switch the USB tether on.
  8. Click connect on the PdaNet software on your desktop.
  9. Launch your browser and Enjoy!

Google gives Priority to your Inbox with a new feature!

I woke up this afternoon and was accessing my Gmail Inbox, i was curious to find a new link (in highlighted RED letters) next to my email ID saying “New! Priority Inbox BETA”, so i decided to checkout this new feature.

Priority Inbox is a new (BETA) feature offered by Google within their email based product Gmail, once this new feature is activated,  it will find out the important mails and sort it out accordingly then put it into a new section called “Priority Inbox” which appears above your normal Inbox link in left side navigation menu

If any of your important email is left behind by the automatic detection of this new feature, then you can mark emails as important or not important manually and get it on the Priority Inbox

Google has released the new Priority Inbox feature to limited set of people and is currently in BETA mode

Also a new interactive video has also been launched by Google explaining what exactly Priority Inbox feature is all about

We hope this new feature will be rolled out to all Gmail users during next week in their inboxes

Mark Zuckerberg calls movie on Facebook, “fiction”

If you’ve been in loop, you probably know about “The Social Network”. The movie whose story is supposed to be that of the Harvard Students who started the fastest growing network in their dorm, Facebook.

What we have found out is that Mark Zuckerberg is unhappy with the movie. He calls it “Fiction.” According to him, what is portrayed in the movie aberrates from the actual happening.

The movie presents a story which proposes series of betrayals and desperation for friends which they would never be able to appease. Chris Hughes, Facebooks co-founder quoted, “That’s not what was going on. It was a little more boring and quotidian than that.”

Mark is quite angry with the press too and in an interview with NYT, he blatantly said  “Honestly, I wish that when people try to do journalism or write stuff about Facebook that they at least try to get it right.”

Firefox brings a new evolution to Tabbed Browsing

Firefox’s creative lead Aza Raskin presented today a cool new concept which could revolutionize the way we browse. The early project called Tab Candy makes tabbed browsing less cluttered and more organized by grouping tabs together.

If you’re one of those people who works with a dozen of tabs open yet finds it a quite a hassle to manage them, this new project might be a life saver for you.Just push a button and an overview of all tabs will show up just like expose in Mac.Then you can group your tabs to organize your work-flow.The tabs could also be categorized according to their context to simplify browsing experience which is explained at great length in the video below.

An Introduction to Firefox’s Tab Candy from Aza Raskin on Vimeo.

Firefox tab candy is not an extension,it will be a built in feature in future Firefox builds. To try out this great new concept head over to this link and download an early build of Firefox with Tab Candy built in.

Jawbone ICON: One Cool Bluetooth Device Reviewed

In the world of bluetooth headsets one could easily be overwhelmed when picking and choosing what fits their needs best.  Some are hugely expensive and offer relatively nothing more than the cheapest headset at the local Quickie-Mart while others are reasonably priced and come with all the bells and whistles.  Recently we were able to test such a device in shop, the Jawbone ICON, and we have the whole broken down review just ahead!

Here We Go!

First off, the packaging is beautiful, modern, and eye catching.  After gazing for a second your attention is grabbed by the seemed-to-be floating headset in the top of the box.  A quick slide of the bottom of the packaging reveals a whole slew of accessories, from ear hooks to ear buds.  Included are an array of sizes of soft ear buds to be used with the provided ear hook, or one could choose the specialized Jawbone ear buds that can be maneuvered to fit in your ear without the hook, giving everything a more sophisticated feel.  I personally could not get used to this feel and opted for the ear hook instead but I believe this is more of a personal preference and not a flaw of the product.

Initial Power Up and Pair

The initial power up and pair of the ICON was unarguably one of the easiest I’ve ever done.  Basically, even a user with basic tech knowledge could read the clear, short instruction cheat sheet provided and successfully pair it with their phone.  After completing the set-up I realized I needed to put the device on the charger.  This was odd because the box said it should be partially charged although it only turned on for 5-10 minutes.  This was not a hassle though, as the Jawbone ICON can fully charge in just 90 minutes.  Thats a full charge people!

Personalization

One thing I absolutely loved about the Jawbone ICON was that it could be easily personalized unlike any other bluetooth out there.  With a quick visit to this site I found out some of the amazing things you can do with this headset, such as viewing the battery of the headset on my iPhone’s status bar straight out of the box.  One other I tried was free 411.  After setting up I can confirm that they do in fact offer free 411, although it is ad supported and not very enjoyable to use.  Still useful nonetheless.  The website also allows you to personalize the voice of your bluetooth, who reads you your estimated battery life and alerts you of a caller.  This was easy to do also and only required about 10 minutes of syncing, plugging the headset into the PC with the provided USB cable, and visiting a webpage to preform the update.  I was very impressed with these features because I have yet to see them on any other bluetooth headset available on the market today.

Sound Quality

After using the JAwbone ICON for a couple of long conversations I was able to easily form my opinion regarding my experiences of the sound quality.  On my end the call was amazing, better than using just my cellphone.  I enjoyed a noticeable difference in peoples voices, background noise and overall quality.  When speaking to my grandfather he said he could hear me good but couldn’t tell a drastic difference from the other times I have spoken to him without the device.  Others basically reported the same thing, really good quality but no huge noticeable difference from other calls.  I believe me listening for the changes and being able to distinguish good quality sounds made my judgement a little better than most who were taken back when told they were being spoken to on a bluetooth.  Overall the sound was good, utilizing the dual microphones built in for wind reduction and noise, and made hard conversations that much easier.

Continued Use and Impressions

After using the device for a few more days I realized I have become dependent on it for most long or even brief conversations.  Something about the freedom of being able to do things while having a conversation with someone makes me very happy.  Since the battery life on my iPhone is less than perfect, I opted to turn the headset off when it wasn’t being directly used to conserve juice.  Surprisingly even after turning it off, which causes the two to unpair, the second the switch is turned back on the two are reconnected like nothing ever happened.  I found this to be a huge time saver because every bluetooth I’ve ever used required a repair after the device was shut off, which is usually about a 10 minute job.  In the end, I would most definitely recommend the Jawbone ICON to anyone who plans on getting use out of their device and needs something of great quality.  The MSRP is only $99.99 and can be purchased at here or at your local electronics store.

A special thanks to Jawbone for allowing us such an awesome review unit.  Stay tuned for future comparison reviews with some other leading bluetooth headsets!  Comments are appreciated, especially if you’ve used a Jawbone ICON before.

Steve Ballmer speaks about Future Plans for Microsoft [Video]

At IndiMix’10, the best part and perhaps the only thing that interested me was Steve Ballmer’s Keynote. Obviously, we could get know much more what the worlds 2nd Biggest Tech Giant [ ;) ] is planning to do.

Steve went on to discuss the future of all products pointing towards just one keyword – CLOUD. Other web technologies like HTML5 and Silverlight are also focused on.

Almost all our key products are evolving towards cloud

Thats exactly true and you will get a glimpse of it with Microsoft Office 2010. Windows, Live, Xbox and almost everything they’ve got, they are probably risking it on the cloud. Someone said, Cloud would be all dum devices speaking to one cloud but Ballmer cleared it with a much better conceptual understanding. It’s Fusion of Internet, Enterprise Data Centre, TV, PC and everything digital. Clouds will create opportunities, No new servers and global deployment would be as easy as taking a hot bath.

Clouds over, now Bing. Bing is what they know of users and what they know of web. Now the most interesting part, they say 30 more Windows Phones will be launching next quarter, while last year they released 50 phones. Great, 30 phones in just one quarter? Raining Windows Phone 7!

Ballmer rolled a video too which caught our eyes, which shows technology of future and also what all you might expect from Microsoft in future. BTW I think the usage of Pen in touch devices is what Microsoft is betting on, almost all tablet type devices. The idea of courier is also somewhere in the video. Lookout!
