In today’s world every one depends on technology and so we need to take care of things. Just like our laptops. Laptop theft is nowadays becoming common. So if you have some really necessary things in it like you project files and other stuff and if it get’s stolen, How will you get it back?
A software called Adeona makes it possible for a laptop user to track the thief of his laptop. It uses simple things. It always runs in the background of your laptop. It monitors the location of the laptop via IP addresses and local network topology , which is a useful information to find out your laptop thief. The Mac OS X version allowed you to capture the pictures of the laptop user via built-in iSight camera. All this information can only be sent to the original user via encryption methods.
It is free and you can get the software here.
The software was developed by Ph.D. students from University of Washington – Gabriel Maganis and Thomas Ristenpart, and UW faculty members Tadayoshi Kohno and Arvind Krishnamurthy.

Actually the software does not provide the exact location in minutes. It only provides the IP address. To get the location you have to have law enforcement or subponea filed with the ISP to get the exact address. This takes several days to several weeks. Adeona will not help you with this process either, it is a research project with no support or assistance to walk you through the process. My company did research for theft recovery solutions and Adeona was one of them, but we went with a different solution that actaully does get the exact location as well as assists with recovery.
